Organisation

Sun Child Nederland is a foundation whose main purpose is to raise funds and financial support for small-scale projects for children who are in a hopeless situation. The Sun Child Nederland foundation works on a completely voluntary basis. The people who work for the foundation receive no money for this. Our main objective is to ensure that all the money we recieve from sponsors is spend directly to help the girls finish their education.

Our foundation consists of a small but highly dedicated team. We try to give the girls who previously stayed at the children’s home in India the possibility to finish their education. We do this by keeping in contact with the girls, help them paying for their education and monitor their education and progress.
Our foundation believes that it is important to provide financial support to small projects so that private and idealistic initiatives are given the chance to function independently and be viable.

For us as a foundation, it is also important that all donations go directly to the right place. For this reason we only make use of direct payments to renowned shelters, schools or universities.
In the Netherlands, the foundation works on a completely voluntary basis, ensuring that no money is diverted from the core activity.

Bob Loonen

Bob Loonen is the founder of Sun Child Nederland and its current chairman. He acts as first point of contact for the foundation.

I'm Bob Loonen born in 1980 in Breda, social work graduate, currently working as a flightattendant.

With a beautiful "illusion" to resolve the world’s problems, I left for India in 1999. I had read that it was a country of pronounced inequalities and I wanted to see if I could make a difference to the lives of those less privileged than myself.

But where could I possibly start? Offering my help was not as easy as I had thought, so I went from project to project until I happened to meet the couple Sundararaj and Thilagavathy. They had recently taken into their own home several girls who were being evicted as a result of a re-organisation in another children’s home. Immediately I was struck by the work Sundararaj and his wife did without asking for anything in return. For this reason I decided to help them.

Together with Sundararaj I established the foundation "Children Of The Sun Trust" in India, so that we could continue their work. To ensure that the foundation in India remains viable I also established the foundation “Sun Child Nederland" in the Netherlands. This foundation aims at providing financial assistance to small-scale initiatives where people want to improve the lives of children. The first initiative that would receive this support was the "Children of the Sun Trust" foundation in India.

In the following years, we have been able to expand the project and to provide a home for more girls, thanks to the sponsorship from family and friends in the Netherlands. With their financial assistance we’ve managed to give the girls in the home an opportunity to go to school and even to college. In 2009, Deepa become the first girl in the home to attain a Master’s degree in Tamil.

Erik de Looff

Erik de Looff is treasurer for the Sun Child Netherlands foundation

I am Erik de Looff. I live with my wife Sacha and our three children: Jip, Jinte and Pelle.

I visited India in 2004. During this trip I was able to meet the Indian couple Thilagavathy and Sundararaj in their children’s home “Children of the Sun”. After my travels through India, South East Asia and South America, I started working as a teaching assistant for Youth Social Services in the Netherlands. Within social services we try to create better opportunities for the future of young people. Opportunities that children in India are often not given, especially when they are far down on the social ladder. Fortunately Thilagavathy and Sundararaj make a real difference by offering opportunities for a brighter and better future for under-privileged girls.

I find this tangible form of development aid incredibly important. The money that is provided through the foundation Sun Child Nederland is spent in a very quantifiable way. Everyone involved does so selflessly and with passion. During my visit to the children’s home, I have seen how our financial aid can produce such humble results: a mat, to not have to sleep on the floor; a stove, so that healthy food can be cooked on gas instead of over an open wood fire, repairing the roof…

Bob has hired a teacher to give weekly English- and computer classes so the girls will have skills that are useful in the labour market and thus be less dependent on others. Bob regularly visits (at his own expense) the home, which inspires confidence and provides assurance about the finances. I hope I can join him for another visit so that I, together with my wife and daughters, can see that a drop in the ocean actually does make a difference.

Agnes Razenberg

Agnes Razenberg is secretary for Sun Child Netherlands

I'm Agnes Razenberg. Ten years ago my son Bob returned from a world tour. He was touched by people who led a project for orphans in India. His enthusiasm soon rubbed off and from that moment my husband and I also felt that we were involved and started to make monthly donations to the project. After my husband and I visited the project during our trip to India I decided to contribute by taking a seat on the board of the foundation. I am a teacher and I feel very involved in the welfare of children, both in our country and elsewhere in the world. The orphanage in India is not a big project, but it is small-scale. What I find important is that it is run by Indians themselves. All the money we give directly benefits the children. Bob checks all expenses and income carefully. He even pays for his own travel there.

We are very pleased with your monthly contribution. This gives us the opportunity to continue this work for the children who are less fortunate than us.
Deepa lost both her parents at an early age. After their passing Deepa lived on the street because the house where she had lived with her parents was rented and there was no money left for her to pay the rent. In India there is no social safety net for children like Deepa

After some time living on the street Deepa came to live in the Children’s home (that our organisation has been sponsoring from 2004 until june 2016). Here she got the opportunity to go to school. Deepa was a diligent student, who worked hard at achieving good results and helping the other girls at the home. As the oldest girl, she took it upon herself to support the other girls by providing comfort or guidance

With the support of our sponsors in the Netherlands Deepa was able continue studying after completing high school. Deepa eventually attained her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Tamil, with the help of our foundation.
